Whether you use your computer for work in the office, or for relaxation in the family home, computers are susceptible to viruses. It is tough to rid a computer of a virus once it has become infected, and even then it is even tougher if you know little about computer systems.
Computer viruses come in many forms but they all do the same damage to your computer. They may modify, break or even delete your system files. They are also capable of exploiting the security system set up on your computer. The viruses invade and infect your computer system by attaching to the freeware applications, e-mails and programs that you access on your computer. Spyware can be more than an annoyance. Poorly programmed spyware can interfere with other programs and can even cause system instability. Privacy issues are at stake as well.
This type of software is often installed without a user’s consent and often can’t be uninstalled without special tools. When distributors use tricks and deception to install uninvited software, trust is destroyed.
Your first line of defense is common sense. Be careful when you install new software. Only install software from trusted websites, and always read the license agreement. Some companies disclose that they install extra things with their software, but most people don’t read the license and never know it.

They’re actually more like the car than the key, I suppose. They are the tools we use to travel around the web, finding interesting destinations. The trouble is, sometimes an unwanted passenger climbs aboard along the way. In some cases they may even carjack you, taking you places you had no intention of going.
So, what to do?
Users have options, starting with browser selection. Internet Explorer still has over 90% of the ‘market’ (an odd term for free software), but it’s popularity is waning slightly. Firefox and others have inherently better security and the added advantage of running on Linux.
