Posted by: admin  :  Category: how to fix computer

my computers sound has gotten deleted and when i google how to fix it everything has to do with computer speakers. im looking how to fix the sound device in the computer. thanks.

Try and find out the make/model of your motherboard (if you open the PC and have a look it should be printed on the large board at the back). Then go on to the manufacturer’s website and download the drivers for your soundcard.

What is making my computer run slow and freeze up?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: computer freeze up

The computer runs normal when first booted but if you try to do several processes at once it will freeze. I have throughly check the computer for Viruses and Spyware the system is clean. Also when the computer freezes or runs very slow the CPU is reading 99% idol, so no processes are running. Do you think it could be a memory or hard drive issue?
I've killed all unnecessary services and remove all items from MSCONFIG and the System Registry. Also, I have over 20 GB of free space on my hard drive. The system is a HP Laptop, with 1 GB of memory.

Thanks for your reponses.

Can anyone help me figure out my computer problem?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: computer problem help

I recently bought a Dell Dimension Desktop with a 250GB hard drive and Windows Vista. My old computer has a 160GB hard drive with Windows XP. I want to install my old hard drive on my new computer, in addition to the new hard drive. Would I have to upgrade my old hard drive to Windows Vista?
Also, can I move files from my old hard drive to my new one when they are both installed in my new computer?
I've only ever had 1 hard drive on a computer at a time.

It is quite easy to add another drive to your system. On the back of the drive, there is a jumper to set the drive to be either a master or a slave. This is important if you connect both drives to the same cable that connects to the motherboard. The existing drive should have the jumper set to master and the second drive needs to be set to slave. After doing this, Vista will take care of setting it up automatically.
You can move your data files to the first drive if you wish, but for better performance, I would use the 2nd drive for storage and keep the first drive for programs. You will not be able to access or run any of the programs on the 2nd drive. This is because they are not installed in the Vista Registry.
Also, the first answer is incorrect. You will not be able to boot to XP on the second drive unless you reinstall it there. From Windows2000 on, including XP, hardware identification during installation is integrated into the operating system and cannot be moved to a different computer.
Knowing that, move the data file you want to keep to the other drive and reformat the second drive. If you have the XP CD and want to have a dual boot system, Vista is very friendly and will set it all up for you. Just put the XP CD in the drive and Vista will ask a few questions and do it automatically.

Slow computer?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: slow computer problems

I have tried defragmenting, disc cleaning, checked for spyware and still my computer crawls along. Painfully slow. I wonder whether it's Norton that is at the heart of the problem. I installed it thinking that I was buying the best but have heard since that it does slow your computer. Anyone else had problems of this sort with Norton? And did things improve when you uninstalled it? What would you advise as an alternative?

I think you have done many good things to keep up your computer maintenance. Regarding spyware its a possibility. However, I think Norton would have caught it.

is a normal result of having security software like an anitvirus on your computer. The software must constantly update it files and signatures. All this information is logged in your computer. The majority of the information is placed in your registry.

When your antivirus performs a scan. It produces a log. This log can be up to 100 megabytes of information each. The registry holds all this info. The addition of the info is not the major problem. Its that the information is placed in many places in your registry. This causes fragmentation of files. Your computer's operating system must search through the massive files in the registry constantly. If the registry is error-filled, fragmented, or bloated with unnecessary and duplicate files, you will have major slowdown. Organize and keep it maintained, the problem will most likely be solved. You can scan to see the condition of your registry and see what resources you can unlock resources.

Also you should try to see what processes are loaded when your computer starts. Often the antivirus will check your email, scan, and even update at the same time. This may be occuring everytime you start up your PC. These acts can last as long as 3 hours. They may be running silently in the background without your knowledge. Maintain them by following the directions below or by tweaking the settings in your antivirus:

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",
click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that you dont want to load win the antivirus is starting
6. Click "OK"
