Freezing Xbox 360

Posted by: Kris Nickels  :  Category: troubleshooting computer

Often times, freezing is an issue with Xbox 360’s. Naturally, it always happens at all the worst possible times; that’s just bad luck though. What is actually making this powerful machine freeze, however, isn’t luck at all.

Freezing on an Xbox 360 can be the result of a surprisingly large amount of different things. Though it is good that some of these things are really easy to fix, it’s bad that it will be somewhat tedious to determine which possibility is the actual cause. Once we figure that out, though, it’ll be a short matter of fixing it and getting back to the important stuff–the games!

So you have a busted Xbox 360, freezing like it just wants to make you mad, and you don’t know what to do with it. There is one fix that works more often than most people will admit–restart it. Especially if your console just froze up for the first time, the problem will probably go away without any trouble just from doing that. Even if your 360 has been freezing a few times lately, simply restarting the system will still work. If your Xbox locks up every once in a while, that’s just a fluke. But if it’s happening consistently, then there definitely is a problem.

One thing to certainly check, is that the Xbox is broken, not just the game. Try playing all of your games, and keep in mind which ones weren’t working properly. Then, take those over to a friend’s house, and try playing them on his/her console. If they seem to work on one, but not the other, there may well be something faulty about your Xbox. Another way to check, is when it freezes up next, attempt to open the Xbox Dashboard. It will still work if only the game is damaged, but not if the Xbox has issues.

So your whole gaming platform is freezing just because of a lousy disc? Well, the simple thing to do would be just clean off the disc. There are lots of products designed to fill in scratches, and any soft fabric cloth will work just fine for clearing off the dirt and dust. Do all that, and give it another whirl. Also, you should try loading the game up onto the Xbox hard drive; it’ll play a bit better from there. If that isn’t the source, we will have to dig yet deeper. The remaining possibilities are: a strange file on the hard drive’s cache, internet issues, or a hardware malfunction.

Sometimes, it can be hard to be certain that a freezing issue is being caused by your Xbox 360 hard drive’s cache. The best way to check that this is causing the problems, just turn on your Xbox without the hard drive attached. If this appears to solve all the locking up, then there was a problem in the hard drive, and most likely had to do with the files stored in the cache. To get rid of this, we have to clear the cache; to do that, follow these steps: Reattaching the hard drive, turn the Xbox on again. Going into the Xbox Dashboard, pick the “System” section, and then the “Memory” section. Press Y to access “Device Options.” Then with your controller, and in this order, push X X Lb Rb X X. It will then prompt you about performing system maintenance; just press A.

If, on your Xbox 360, freezing only occurs when you are playing on Xbox Live, it might be due to your internet connection. If this were the case, you should notice it when just using the internet on your computer; unless, of course, the cord just isn’t plugged in right. I’d recommend checking that out.

Finally, it may be that your Xbox freezing is a kind of visual clue to an issue hiding inside the case of your Xbox. An Xbox 360 that is freezing nonstop, with no noticeable pattern, could have a hardware issue. Your console, without you noticing, might have overheated, and the GPU’s contact to the rest of the Xbox may have become faulty. Though this should trigger those flashing red lights around your Xbox’s power button, sometimes it doesn’t. Fixing this would mean reestablishing the GPU’s connection to the motherboard, and repairing the thermal compound around it, to prevent all this from simply happening once again.

This sounds intimidating, I know, yet it isn’t so bad. If your Xbox’s freezing issues are in fact a symptom of a hardware malfunction like this, they aren’t going anywhere until you make them. But don’t just accept your Xbox as broken and buy a new one; these types of problems are totally fixable! At least give it a shot.
